Poof! You've just accidentally deleted a report that you've worked on for hours. You have a deadline and don't have time to recreate your legal nurse consulting report.

Don't despair!  First, resist the urge to start hitting keys on your keyboard or clicking on the screen with your mouse. Next, hold your Control (Ctrl) key down and press the Z key at the same time.  This combination of Ctrl+Z is a universal Windows keyboard shortcut  to undo errors. If you couldn't resist the urge to use the keyboard or mouse, you may need to press Ctrl+Z more than once. The undo keyboard shortcut for Mac is Cmd+Z.

When working in Word or Excel, you can prevent loss of work by setting the AutoRecovery to every 1 or 2 minutes. In Word/Excel 2003, go to Tools, Options, Save, Save AutoRecover Information and enter the number of minutes. In Word/Excel 2007, go to the round Office icon in the top left corner, Word (Excel) Options, Save, Save AutoRecover Information and enter the number of minutes.  In Word/Excel 2010 and later, go to File instead of the round icon, then Options, Save, Save AutoRecover Information and enter the number of minutes. You may also want to get into the habit of using another keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+S, every few sentences. Ctrl+S (Cmd+S for Mac) saves your work so that even if you were unable to undo a deletion, you would only have to recreate a few sentences.

And if you really want to prevent loss of work, buy a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) battery backup. A battery backup not only prevents power surges from harming your equipment, it keeps your computer working during balckouts, for at least as long as it takes to save all your work.
